There's this fancy new housing project going up in Vegas right next to Little Red Rock, a spot on private land with some super old rock carvings. The project's called Astra, and it's being built by Howard Hughes Holdings, the same folks behind Summerlin.

Little Red Rock Rendering
This Astra development(AI Rendering) is pretty swanky – it covers 170 acres on the mountainside and offers killer views of the Vegas Valley plus up-close looks at the mountains and Little Red Rock. They're not exactly cheap either – just six home lots sold for nearly $23 million total back in December!

Howard Hughes Holdings claims they're serious about protecting Little Red Rock. Matt Walker, who handles community relations for the company, says they're working with archaeologists, government folks, preservation groups, and the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe to keep the area safe.

The company boasts about being good land stewards, pointing to past deals with the Bureau of Land Management that actually made the neighboring Red Rock Canyon conservation area bigger.

Little Red Rock

Little Red Rock sits on the edge of Vegas near Red Rock Canyon and has had its share of trouble. Rayette Martin from Nevadans for Cultural Preservation says it became a hangout for graffiti artists, partiers, and people shooting guns. She's been helping the landowner clean the place up and warns that curious visitors would not only be trespassing but could accidentally damage historic stuff like ancient cooking pits or the rock art itself by just walking or sitting in the wrong spots.

There are still worries about what might happen with more people around. Martin points out that folks will check out the area whether they're allowed to or not, potentially causing damage. Last year, volunteers spent almost 930 hours scrubbing graffiti off rocks!

One cool thing – the developer paid for some artwork on highway overpasses that shows petroglyph-style images similar to the real ones at Little Red Rock. They even met with the Paiute Tribe to make sure the art was respectful to the original rock carvings.
